Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park
A 3.700-hectare protected area whose environmental values have been…
Molino del Agua Natural Area (Paraje Natural), situated in La Mata, protects one of the last remaining dune systems on the Alicante coast. Designated a protected site in 2006, its 17 hectares comprise a landscape of exceptional environmental value, with shifting dunes along the shoreline and stabilised inland areas now covered in pine forest.
The site supports rare species such as the endemic beetle Paratriodonta alicantina and the Kentish plover, a protected wading bird that nests in these open sandy habitats. A place where nature and history meet, it forms part of the municipality's natural heritage.
Guided tours are available for those wanting to explore the area in depth, running at 10:00 and 12:00. In 2026, these take place on the following Sundays: 15 March, 12 April, 10 May, 14 June and 5 July. You can sign up at www.turismodetorrevieja.com/molinodelagua
